Superficial things that are actually spiritual
from a holistic (life)stylist
Thanks being here! As always: If you like what you’re about to read I would love to get a heart/restack or a recommendation to a friend. It goes a long way <3
Under the premises that we’re not humans with spiritual experiences but spiritual beings with a human experience actually everything can be spiritual. In fact, the most mundane and superficial things are. This essay is exactly about that and how to live a luxurious life that brims of abundance. A life lived like this is lived spirituality in your daily life and not only during the retreat, the yoga mat or the 5 minute breathwork you do every morning. Spirituality isn’t tied an exercise it’s the whole way you live. It actually means “breath” so yeah, you practice spirituality just as unconscious as you breathe and all changes when you create awareness around it.
Manicure
One of my favourite ways to experience my spirituality is with touch. You have probably heard about chakras along the spine but there are more in the body. Not only are they the very physical tool we touch ourselves or environment with they also hold great energy. As I work a lot with people and touch them I started to strengthen my nails as my fingers are the gateways this energy flows through. I basically took “builder gel” literally and you can do it, too.
I also use the actual time it takes for a presence practice. I can’t use my hands while getting a manicure and I set an intention before she starts to take the old off and layers the new onto me. I am presently watching her instead of being on my phone. Sometimes I even close my eyes and meditate.
Outfit choice
An obvious one if you follow me for a while. But getting dressed in the morning is a spiritual tool to embody the version of yourself that feels most aligned, true and evolved. It is something so normal for us so the idea itself of bringing presence into this process changes a lot. Actually taking the time to really feel how you feel like in that moment will change a lot on how you dress.
The ritualisation of choosing an outfit is what -personally - makes or breaks my day. I give more guidance in my eBook but let this be said: You can manifest any feeling into a textile experience.
Hairdresser
That hair holds history is as common knowledge in the spiritual scene as the hips store emotions. So getting a haircut is actually THAT deep (for me). I probably do it twice a year and I celebrate that day like my birthday. I usually do it around a full or new moon depending on what I feel like releasing or completing.
Not only can you set an intention whenever you loose hair. You can also weave energy into them whenever you style it. Taking care of your hair is a form of self love but also compassion from peers. Oiling scalp and brushing hair is a connective practice in India. Braiding and washing hair is bonding in african culture. It’s an intimate moment with oneself or loved ones. That’s what makes it deeply spiritual but also an experience that is so close to your soul as it happens in and on your body. That’s soul care.
Working out
Or how I call it: alchemy. Using your emotional world in that way is like a transformation ritual. Emotions are energy in motion and a workout is one of many ways to express emotions instead of internalising them.
In my understanding it doesn’t matter what kind of workout you’re doing as long as you’re doing something with that energy instead of becoming constipated. The feeling of being stuck surely releases itself after some sort of movement. My personal favorites are walking for all “non-emotions” aka overthinking, gym for all emotions felt in my womb and belly like anger, yoga for all heart feeling matters and meditation for the connection to source. And yes, I consider meditation a workout - have you ever seen a brain activity scan from a meditative state?
So, yes it is that deep and your life is as spiritual as you think it is. No matter if you believe it or not. Please consider these examples with care. Spirituality has no hierarchy and you might have other routines or rituals that make you feel connected to the source of your spirituality. These are just some opportunities that I practice and know a lot of people do, too. You’re not less or more just because you do things different.
